The Best Ayurveda Retreats In Europe With Healing Holidays
30/07/2024, Healing HolidaysThere are many who still consider India and Sri Lanka to be the only places to go for a proper Ayurveda programme - after all, it is where it was conceived and perfected - but not everyone wants to schlep the whole way there. Thankfully, Europe is now home to a number of Ayurvedic retreats that offer authentic Ayurvedic treatments, a dosha-specific diet and daily Yoga and meditation. Discover our top Ayurveda retreats in Europe below.
Engel Ayurpura, Italy
Engel Ayurpura is a stunning little gem located high in the Dolomites in the Southern Tyrol, a remote little spot in a ravishing setting framed by the mountains looking down deep into the valley below. Owned by the Kohler family, they decided to open a fully focussed Ayurvedic Spa in 2023 as Carmen, one of the owners, saw the transformational effects first hand on herself following stints spent in India practising Ayurveda, and we have to say, they have made their version as authentic as it can be outside the motherland. You have the Classic Ayurvedic treatments like Abhyanga and Shirodhara. There are 3 night Taster Programmes, but Engel Ayurpura's big focus is on Panchakarma Detoxes for 7, 10, 14 or 21 days. Most of the therapists have been trained in India, and are very adept to traditional Indian healing. There is Yoga in the morning, with the 07h30 class aimed at the more proficient, and the later 08h30 class for those newer to Yoga or who just want a gentler stretch. There is also normally a meditation class or talk in the late-afternoon.
Ayurveda Resort Mandira, Austria
Nestled in Austria’s Styrian hill country, Ayurveda Resort Mandira is a holistic Ayurveda retreat which offers treatments based on solid traditional Ayurvedic foundations but tailored to Western lifestyles - you don’t have to worry about consuming ghee or having enforced enemas. Under the direction of Christina Mauracher, an old hand at Ayurveda, this family-run gem has an assembly of experts, Ayurvedic specialists & therapists from India. There is also a range of alternative & complementary physicians, as well as nutrition experts, all of whom combine to create a unique symbiosis of Ayurvedic expertise and diagnostics, and alternative therapies. The resort offers a huge range of programmes from short breaks to the full-on traditional Panchakarma Detox, as well as acupuncture and incredible oil massages, and for activities they have Yoga, breathing exercises and meditation.
Ayurveda Parkschlosschen, Germany
Located in a private 11-acre parkland surrounded by grand old trees, vineyards and a gently flowing brook, the family-run Ayurveda Parkschlösschen was one of the first and still the only “strictly Ayurveda” health resorts to open in Germany. Everything from the food to the forms of treatments and exercises, with even the interiors based on the principles of this ancient system of medicine. The main event at this family-owned property is their Panchakarma detox cure - starting from 10 days, this intense programme aims to help you achieve top physical and mental form by ridding the body of toxins and metabolic waste. It’s not for the faint hearted, but it certainly does deliver exceptional results. For those wanting something a little gentler, the spa also offers yoga, stress management and short stay programmes.
