Eating Well During the Festive Season

Temptation is never as apparent as during the festive season, and with dinner and party invitations streaming in it can be a daunting task to remain healthy and well. Here are some of our top tips for staying on track this Christmas.

Always Eat Breakfast

This may sound like a broken record, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Stock up on vitamins and nutrients with a warming bowl of porridge or oats, complimented by some fresh fruit and honey. This will help to control your appetite later on in the day, and prevent the urge to snack.

Healthy Snacking

If you are going to snack, opt for something a bit healthier like yoghurt, fresh fruit or raw vegetables with a nutritious dip. Try and stock up before you head to that party, this way you won’t have the urge to devour a whole tray of canapés.

Avoid The Hangover

While the healthiest route is to steer clear of alcohol altogether, it is Christmas after all and a couple of glasses won’t hurt. Just make sure to alternate one alcoholic drink for a non-alcoholic one, and try and pace yourself to one alcoholic drink an hour.

Stay Hydrated

Another one that might be a no-brainer, but important to remember nonetheless. It’s already more difficult to drink those 8 glasses of water a day when winter creeps in, but when festivities are underway time flies and suddenly it’s the evening and you’ve only had a cup of tea and glass of wine. Try supplementing some of those glasses of water with herbal teas (decaffeinated) and infusions, they will keep you warm and hydrated.

Get Moving

Exercise always helps, and never more so than during Christmas. A brisk walk outside will burn calories, and with the cold weather there is the potential to burn even more as your body is also working to stay warm.

Don't Skip Meals

Often people skip a meal to make up for the calories they'll be taking in at a party through alcohol. This actually has the opposite effect, as our bodies need vitamins and nutrients to help detoxify our systems. Make sure you eat filling and nutritious meals, alcohol is just empty calories.
